- SHARP ANNOUNCES 286 VGA NOTEBOOK COMPUTER
-
- _______
- SUMMARY
-
- On March 21, Sharp announced the PC-6220, which we believe is a breakthrough
- notebook computer. The PC-6220 is a 286 VGA notebook computer with a 20 MB
- hard disk. It weighs only four pounds and measures just 1.4" by 8.5" by 11".
- The PC-6220 comes with 1 MB of RAM, a 20 MB hard disk, 640 x 480 VGA graphics,
- and a 12-MHz 80286 processor. It does NOT have a floppy disk. Sharp says that
- this configuration is scheduled for U.S. availability in June and will have an
- SRP below $4,000.
-
- We think that the PC-6220 provides very good functionality for its weight. It
- offers sufficient features to meet the needs of many mobile computer users.
- Sharp has not been a major player in the portable computer market, so it is
- unclear whether Sharp can obtain the distribution and customer loyalty
- necessary to unseat the Compaq LTE/286, which is probably its biggest
- competitor.
-
- The PC-6220 is about three pounds lighter than the LTE/286 and has a much
- better display. The PC-6220 is also priced about $1,000 less. However, the
- Sharp machine has some weaknesses when compared with the LTE/286. It lacks a
- built in floppy disk. Another weakness is probably its battery life (Sharp
- didn't specify how long it lasts, therefore we would guess it has a short
- life). Furthermore, no mention is made about the screen being backlit.
-
- We expect many other notebooks similar to Sharp's to become available this
- year.

- OVERVIEW OF NOTEBOOK COMPUTERS
-
- The notebook category is the hottest segment of the portable computer market.
- NEC's UltraLite, a 4.4 pound XT-compatible, and Zenith's MinisPort, a 5.8
- pound machine which features a 2-inch micro floppy disk drive, have received a
- lot of attention.
-
- The leader in this market is the Compaq LTE/286. The LTE/286 weighs 6.7 pounds
- and measures 8 1/2 by 11 inches, and is 1.9 inches high. It offers a 80C286
- processor, a 40 MB hard disk and a standard 3.5-inch floppy. However, the
- LTE/286 is heavier and thicker than other computers that have been referred to
- as notebooks.
-
- Before the Sharp announcement, notebook computers had been limited by a poor
- screen display. Sharp's 640 x 480 VGA triple supertwist display is one of the
- best for any portable, let alone a notebook computer. Another key weakness of
- notebook computers has been their lack of a standard diskette drive. The
- Zenith MinisPort and the NEC UltraLite both use non-standard removable media,
- which we believe has limited their acceptance. Sharp's lack of a built in
- floppy disk drive will probably limit its acceptance also. (An external 3.5"
- floppy disk drive can be purchased.)

- COMPARING THE PC-6220 WITH THE LTE/286
-
- Sharp advantages. The Sharp notebook computer is almost three pounds lighter
- than the LTE/286, and it is slightly thinner. We think that these differences
- are very important to notebook computer customers. Sharp's screen is much
- better than the LTE/286 screen (VGA vs. CGA). Sharp offers an optional docking
- station that provides slots for AT-compatible cards; the LTE/286 doesn't have
- that option. Furthermore, the Sharp is priced about $1,000 less than the
- Compaq machine.
-
- Compaq advantages. The LTE/286 has a built-in floppy disk and a better battery
- life (three hours vs. Sharp's non-disclosed battery life). Sharp makes no
- mention of the PC-6220 screen being backlit, while Compaq's LTE/286 is backlit.
- Also, Compaq has a very good reputation for quality and has already sold
- hundreds of thousands of portables.
-
- Note: Sharp announced an additional "slice" battery that can be added on to
- the PC-6220 to increase battery life up to five hours. The slice battery
- weighs two pounds.
-
- ____________
- IMPLICATIONS
-
- * Expectations have been raised. The Sharp PC-6220 sets a new level of
- expectations by which competitive notebooks will be judged. Companies planning
- to introduce notebook computers in the future will have to differentiate
- themselves from Sharp's offering.
-
- * Notebook computer sales will accelerate. Before the Sharp PC-6220,
- notebook computers offered limited screen displays and processor speeds. We
- expect many other notebooks similar to Sharp's to become available this year.
- As they become available, we expect notebook computers to have higher unit
- sales than larger laptops and portables.
-
- * Not a direct competitor to Macintosh. The Sharp PC-6220 is small and yet
- offers many attractive features. However, it does not have the functionality
- of the Macintosh Portable. It doesn't have a floppy disk. It cannot run a
- graphical environment very well (slow screen updating, no built-in pointing
- device). Its battery life was not specified, but will not come close to the
- 6-12 hours provided by the Macintosh Portable. It doesn't have networking
- built in. And most importantly, it is not a Macintosh, and so it lacks the
- power and intuitiveness of the Macintosh.
